Once having the world’s largest handmade Persian carpet & largest chandelier, along with the Sultan Qaboos Highway, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the Muscat’s most visited and premier tourist attractions. The carpet now is the world’s second largest handmade carpet with the dimension of 70 x 60 meters, it took four years to weave by 600 women.
This great mosque was a gift to the nation by the majesty Sultan Qaboos to mark his 30th year of reign & was inaugurated by his majesty Sultan himself. It took six years to build & first time was opened in 2001. The mosque occupies about 416,000 square meters of the area & about 300,000 tons of sandstone was used in its construction.
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the absolute architectural wonder and a fine example of modern & ancient Muslim architecture. Grand Mosque is most famous among all the beautiful mosques of Sultan Qaboos throughout the country. Its architecture, interiors, exterior, minarets with amazing golden tomb are unique.
The chandelier – Former World Record
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque holds the world’s second largest chandelier in men’s prayer hall. Gold plated 14 meters & 8.5 tons in weight chandelier decorated with 600,000 shining crystals took more than four years to complete.
Grand mosque can accommodate approx. 20,000 worshipers at a time. It’s main musalla 6500 worshipers, women’ musalla 750 worshipers, the outer paved ground can hold up to 8000 worshipers at a time and there is also some extra space.

Grand Mosque is the only mosque in Oman that allows non-Muslims to visit but there are some rules & regulations. Children under 10 years of age are not allowed to enter into the prayer area. Use of mobile phone, eating & sleeping in the prayer area is also prohibited. This all gives a more peaceful & calmer environment. Tourists from around the world visit this unbelievably beautiful mosque every year.
As above mentioned, it is the only mosque where non-Muslims are also allowed to visit. But everyone entering mosque should have to dress conservatively. No shorts are allowed so everyone has to wear long trousers & covered shoulders dresses. Especially women & girls above 7 years age should have to cover their hairs too. The visitors can borrow head scarfs from there at a very low price.

Except for Friday, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is opened from 8 am to 11 am for tourists, both Muslims and non-Muslims as well. On Friday there is special preparation for Friday prayers and only Muslims can visit the mosque for prayers.
There is no entry fee or ticket to explore grand mosque. All you need is, dress up properly and reach there for an adventure that you will remember throughout your life.
